More on Acupuncture Benefits
Acupuncture is known to be a form of complementary and alternative treatment that does not receive much attention from traditional Western-style doctors. However, more evidence is mounting, showing that it is an effective and safe way to treat various conditions. One of these is a recent report from the Archives of Internal Medicine in which researchers analyzed data from almost 18,000 people who were involved in clinical trials evaluating the effectiveness of acupuncture.
Scientific evidence has shown that acupuncture is effective for chronic pain such as back pain, a common reason for many doctors’ visits from patients, young and old alike. However, aside from chronic pain, acupuncture has also been found to relieve anxiety and depression. A study published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine shows that patients who received acupuncture in addition to antidepressants were able to cut their medication doses, reducing their side effects such as weight gain, nausea, and reduced sex drive.
Brazilian researchers also published research which suggested that acupuncture relieved heartburn and indigestion in pregnant women, leading to a decrease in pain intensity and use of antacid medications. Even among cancer patients who suffer from the side effects of radiation therapy, acupuncture has been found to relieve symptoms and improve their quality of life after cancer treatment.
A meta-analysis of 22 studies examining the effects of acupuncture on migraines and tension headaches demonstrated that it could reduce episodes and treat existing symptoms.
Korean scientists who analyzed 31 studies involving more than 3,000 participants found that acupuncture might have a role in reducing body weight, although more studies are needed to confirm these observations.
